4 herbal remedies for gas & bloating

The carminative class of herbs is ideal to help prevent and relieve gas. I typically recommend these herbs in tea form for a mild yet effective home remedy for occasional gas and bloating.

Peppermint

Peppermint oil is perhaps the most researched herbal for gas and IBS-like symptoms. It boasts positive results in clinical trials, and is even accepted by the American College of Gastroenterology to aid the treatment of IBS. Peppermint is antispasmodic, meaning it slows contractions in the digestive tract (AKA stops cramping).

Peppermint oil in capsule form should be in an enteric-coated capsule for the best results . This ensures the capsule can pass through the stomach to the small intestine.

Caraway

Caraway helps to decrease gas formation and is also an antispasmodic – like peppermint. Caraway and peppermint appear to have a synergistic relationship, creating the best effects when combined.

Many popular blends combine peppermint and caraway, including Heather’s Tummy Tamers and Iberogast.

Fennel

Chewing on fennel seeds is an age-old trick to aid digestion. While less clinically researched, its gas-relieving properties are partially tied to its ability to benefit the gut bacteria through antioxidant, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties

Ginger

Ginger is a popular anti-nausea remedy, though its benefits to digestive distress go much further. Ginger can reduce constipation, which is a main cause of chronic gas and bloating, and traditionally, ginger is a go-to for any digestive issue.

These herbs can help you in a bind, and are absolutely part of healing plans, though they aren’t intended for high usage without evaluation by a professional.

If your gas and bloating is chronic, let’s talk and find the root cause.
