The simplest way to jumpstart mindful eating

Do you scroll on your phone while simultaneously watching tv? How about scrolling your phone, while watching tv, while eating a meal?

This is for you.

We talked about how mindful eating can support gut health.

So, what to do? The most simplest – and most powerful – thing: Step away from the electronics.

Notice how I say this is simple, not easy.

It’s simple in the objective sense that it only involves powering off or turning away from a device. It’s not easy in an emotional and behavioral sense, though. Consider the attachment many of us have to our phone, and/or the (likely subconscious) relief we feel from distracting ourselves from the present reality. So many people experience anxiety without their phone that there’s even a term for it now: nomophobia.

Why start with such an emotionally delicate shift? Electronics are distractions, and mindfulness is the opposite of distraction. If you start by turning off technology (this goes for phones, tv, laptops, tablets, etc), then other components of mindfulness have space to fall into place

Things happen when we’re still. You could feel peace, or you may be flooded with every thought you’ve been trying to avoid. Either way, whatever comes, it’s exactly what needed to happen to move you forward.

Get curious about what comes up for you.
